Alfred Austell Papers, 1833-1930, 1833-1881

These papers consist of various business and legal documents related to Austell's numerous business ventures. Included are land deeds, bookkeeping notes, checks, property insurance policies, bills, receipts, and photocopies of pages from Austell's letter book dealing with banking business, sale of cotton, property acquisition and payment of personal notes. This collection also contained two pocket files which were listed by the month. The contents of these files have been left in the order they were received and listed by the month they were kept (please see box 3).

Alfred Austell, founder and President of the Atlanta National Bank, was also involved in the Bank of Fulton County and was a partner in a number of cotton brokerage firms including Austell and Camp, Austell and Swann, and Austell and Inman. Beyond the cotton trade, Austell also invested in real estate in the Atlanta area and had held stocks in several different railroads. His birthdate is uncertain, but he died in 1881.
